Our Minecraft server and weekly broadcasting updates

For about 1.5 years now LANified! has been running one of the finest Minecraft servers around. We have seen players come and go, and plenty of our share of adventures. We have even seen our share of hardships. Recently our server experienced grief from a very selfish player who has since been banned.

In response to these unfortunate acts we have taken different steps. Initially we rolled back to our last manual backup, which was made on December 1st. Unfortunately a significant amount of work was lost due to the sheer gap in time since the backup. Since then we have been working hard to deal further with the situation. We believe we are now at a point in which we can safely say we are Alberta's Best Minecraft Server. Why? Well for starters we recovered the majority of the work lost, and repaired the damage done as best as we can. We feel confident that those who enjoy our server will be extremely pleased with the outcome of these repairs.

Secondly, we now have a completely automated backup service which rivals corporate backup solutions. It consists of a "staggered" series of backups. It may be a bit confusing at first, but we are confident it will add so much redundancy to our world files that griefing will no longer be a concern whatsoever.

Here's how it works:

  • Every backup will occur at 5am MST
  • Every day of the week will produce a backup and this will go back 7 days, so tomorrow will over-write last week's backup of the same day of the week
  • An additional "weekly" backup will occur on the following days of the months: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd. Each will represent week 1,2,3 and 4 of the Month. Week 5 will not have a backup. When a new Month occurs, each week will overwrite last month's equivalent week.
  • An additional "monthly" backup will occur on the 1st of every month, and this will go back 12 months, overwriting the corresponding month of last year.

What's the best part? It's already working! Unknown to our valued gamers is that this service has been running for 2 days now! Due to the nature of this backup system it is not reliant on plugins, or versions of the server whatsoever. As such, it will always happen, executes in less than a minute, and is completely transparant to players. If anything happens to our precious server we can revert back to yesterday's backup at the drop of a hat. If anything happens to that backup we have lots of other backups to fall back on!

There are many great things that have been accomplished on our lovely server, here are some examples:

We run this server as a public service, for you. If you want to join us, add us to your favourites and connect to mine.lanified.com and be sure not to build on or destroy other people's space/constructions. This is a communal server, and we would love it if you joined us. If you want to chat while playing you can also jump on our mumble server, add it to your favourites: voice.lanified.com (default port).

The future of our Minecraft server is bright, and with time we will offer more services where we see fit. We really hope you enjoy your stay and if you have any issues just let us know and we'll do what we can to help you. There are limits to what we can/will do, but we will do our best.

In other news, we have our weekly Broadcasting. Today unfortunately we were unable to have our commentators present and as such we had to cancel our Starcraft 2 King of the Hill event. For the next few weeks we will be taking a break from our Starcraft 2 King of the Hill event, and enjoy our holidays. When it will return is not certain, but we plan to come back fiercely in the new year.

As for our Thursday Team Fortress 2 King of the Hill^2 events... this weekly event is cancelled permanently until further notice. We do not plan to bring this back at this time as we have seen a steady decline in popularity, and these events take a lot of effort to put on. Initially we saw a fair bit of interest, but unfortunately it grew, and then continued to decline. It is unfortunate that our recent injecetion of prize money was not sufficent to provide a second wind for this event series, and as such we are taking down the Thursday time-slot for retooling. It is not yet certain if we wikll return with a new program in the new year for this timeslot, but it is possible. We hope you enjoyed this event, and will enjoy our other events in the mean time.

The cancellation of this event does not affect LAN party tournament design.

Weekly event prizing, and LANified! 10: pics

Time moves on, and with it we must move also.

Starting this week we will be adjusting some of our weekly formats, and the prizing for each. They are as follows:

EVERY Wednesday, Starcraft 2 1v1 King of the Hill, 7pm - 10pm MST:

Our format for this event will remain the shame. What is changing is that for every 3 wins in a row you will now win $15 CAD. All prizing is done through paypal.

EVERY Thursday, Team Fortress 2 3v3 King of the Hill^2, 7pm - 10pm MST:

Our format is changing in that we will no longer have a qualified and qualifying status. Going forward every single week will be open to the general public. At this time we did not see enough interest in qualified status, dispite the cash prizing, for it to be worthwhile. Furthermore, there will be prizing every week now. For every 3 wins in a row your team will win $15 CAD. Roster changes are disallowed completely, if someone needs to be replaced the counter will be reset. This is not negotiable, get your teams ready in advance please. All prizing is done through paypal.

To watch our weekly events just head to the networks page, or go to http://www.lanified.com/networks . To enter our Team Fortress 2 events jump on the IRC client built into the networks page. To enter our Starcraft 2 events jump in the channel "LANified!" and say you want to enter.

As most of you know, we recently held LANified! 10: Additional Pylons. As such, we have assembled the finest pictures known to man for this event, and grouped them in a tidy central storage location. You do not need to log in to see them: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set= ... 861&type=3

Minecraft reversion

Hey Dudes and Dudettes,

We've been trying to deal with recent Minecraft server issues for the last few weeks. We're sorry that it has been garbage the whole time.

We will be reverting to a known good backup made on Nov 3 2011. I know this will revert a lot of work you folks have done, and we truly are sorry. It is not yet certain if this will resolve the issues we have been seeing but this backup was made when the server was known to be stable by multiple reports.

We do not yet have a conclusive cause of these problems, but we highly suspect people dropping large quantities of experience when dying. We have seen problems around this in the past, so please avoid dealing with experience as much as possible. If you suspect you are bloated with experience, please drop everything in your inventory in the nearest chest and jump into lava. This is no exaggeration, you need to nuke yourself and all the experience on you. It is not yet certain if the experience woes will be resolved in 1.9, but it is highly likely.

We appreciate your patience in this time, and welcome you to rejoin us on our lovely Minecraft server when this junk is resolved.

Going forward we also would like to remind you about our weekly events, they're online and with prizing! These events happen every week, and we broadcast each one LIVE.

Every Wednesday 7pm - 10pm: Starcraft 2 King of the Hill:
Two players enter, one remains, the king. Winning contestants stay in to face a constant stream of challengers, to maintain their supremacy and crown. But if you lose, you're out for the week. For every 3 consecutive wins you get $5, so that's $5:3/$10:6/$15:9, etc. This is open to players of all skill levels!

Every Thursday 7pm - 10pm: Team Fortress 2 KotH^2:
We run alternating weeks between qualified and qualifying weeks. Only teams who get qualified can play during the qualified weeks, but they are fierce competition, excellent to spectate. During the qualifying weeks however anyone can enter! During the qualified weeks, there is a $15 prize on the line, the winning team for each qualified week gets $15! If you want to practice your 3v3 game for our LANs, or try and get a team qualified for that sweet cash, then the qualifying week is for you. If you want to watch some fierce competition, then check out our broadcasts during our qualified week too. Rules and format: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=203 Registered teams (you need to register your team if you want to qualify): viewtopic.php?f=21&t=204
